Our pledge to give you quality, proactive care
The CAHPS survey helps you get the best care possible.
October 21, 2021
What is the CAHPS survey?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) gives the CAHPS survey. CAHPS stands for Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems. Medicare uses the survey to rate the quality of service you receive.
What questions are in the CAHPS survey?
The types of questions include:
- How does your mental and physical health compare to one year ago?
- Has your doctor suggested you should get more physical activity and are you doing so?
- Are you taking care of urinary incontinence (being able to start and stop urine) issues?
- Is your doctor helping you to prevent falls?
These are questions you should be asking yourself as well as your doctor to make sure you get the best care.
Does USMD have mental health resources?
Mental health is an important part of overall health. Yet, many adults with a mental health problem don't get help when they need it.
Mental health needs are greater than ever due to COVID-19. Your primary care doctor can offer advice and referrals to mental health resources.
It’s important to make sure your primary care doctor includes screening for mental health problems just as they would check your blood pressure or for diabetes.
What about resources for chronic conditions?
So many people in our community struggle with chronic (long-term) conditions like diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and urinary tract issues. If you have a chronic condition, you may be eligible for a Chronic Special Needs Medicare Advantage health plan.
This kind of plan helps you to get condition-specific treatment, which means care for a specific long-term health problem. Often, you can get this care at a lower cost.

We make sure your doctor works with everyone on your care team so you get the care you need, when you need it. We also make sure your entire care team knows your care history.
How does USMD organize patient care?
It takes a team to keep you healthy. We suggest that you ask your primary care doctor how they work with other specialists so you get the care you need.
Before any visits, write down any questions you might have so that you don’t forget. Make sure the doctors give you the time to ask the questions you have.
This is the type of information Medicare is asking about in the survey. The survey is an excellent guide to make sure you get the best care possible.
